Empowering Women Through Sewing: The Humjan Vocational Training Centre
Introduction
The Humjan Vocational Training Centre is a beacon of hope and empowerment for underprivileged women in Lahore, Pakistan. Established with a mission to provide vocational training and economic independence through sewing skills, our center aims to uplift and transform lives. We believe ‘Training is not an expense, but an investment in human capital’, as observed by Roy H. Williams.
Mission
At Humjan, we believe that every woman deserves the opportunity to learn and thrive. Our mission is to equip underprivileged women with the skills and confidence needed to secure sustainable livelihoods and break the cycle of poverty. Through comprehensive sewing programs, we empower women to become skilled artisans and entrepreneurs in the fashion and textile industry.
Courses Offered
Our vocational programs cater specifically to the needs and interests of our students:
- Basic Sewing Skills: Learn fundamental techniques such as stitching, hemming, and garment construction.
- Pattern Making and Design: Master the art of pattern drafting, creating custom designs, and garment alterations.
Our students enroll into a six months course for the needs listed above before entering advanced courses offered. They are given a certificate(sanad) after the first part(six months) which they proudly own. We have three classes with students ranging from 28-32 in each class. This is located on a rented building floor with two rooms.
Facilities and Support
The vocational center is equipped with modern cutting tables, benches, irons, fabric and other materials necessary for practical training. Experienced instructors and mentors provide personalized guidance and support, nurturing the talents and aspirations of our students. Currently we have two teachers on board.
Impact and Success Stories
Since our inception, Humjan has transformed the lives of numerous women, the majority being from nearby societies by providing them with marketable skills and opportunities for economic self-sufficiency.
Our students here are increasing day by day due to the favorable time we now start our classes at. We proceed 2.p.m. onwards when girls from schools and colleges are free and willingly come to polish their skills and discover new talents. These girls along with other students in the center, have started stitching uniforms for students in our Al-Maktab school project in the last 3 years.
Women are highly satisfied with and grateful for the services offered in our vocational center and we are glad to see our goals coming to fruition.
Community Engagement and Partnerships
We collaborate with sponsors and donors who share our vision of empowering women through education and vocational training.
Admissions
Admission to Humjan is open to underprivileged women who demonstrate a commitment to learning and personal growth. We offer financial aid to ensure that financial barriers do not hinder access to education and opportunity.
